The Opening: West Recruiting Notes

Here’s the latest recruiting news and notes from today’s first workout at The Opening.

The Opening 2014 kicked off Tuesday with a NIKE SPARQ competition and a NIKE Camp as well. Here's a few recruiting news and notes from today.

*Clayton Valley (Calif.) defensive lineman Kahlil McKenzie will make his college choice on Thursday and is down to Arizona and Tennessee.

“I’ve known for about three weeks where I was going,” McKenzie said. “I have two great schools to choose from. With Arizona, I love how well the coaching staff gets along, they have known each other for so long and it’s like a big family there.

“With UT, it’s the same thing, it’s a great family environment and I love how close everyone is to each other. Tennessee and Arizona both need to win games but they’re bringing in the talent to do so. There’s also the benefit of my family being from Tennessee so that was something else I had to weigh.”

*Long Beach Poly (Calif.) defensive back Iman Marshall said he’s still a ways away from cutting his list but did name a few schools that will likely make his cut.

“The two local schools, UCLA and USC will always be on there and Stanford too,” Marshall said. “I like a lot of out state schools too including LSU, Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida and Tennessee.

“My plan is to take all my visits and then announce on Signing Day. I want to cut my list down a little at the end of the summer but I need to sit down with my family and figure that out before I do.”

*Saguaro (Ariz.) wide out Christian Kirk is one of two players who attended The Opening last year. He’s currently sitting at 10 schools and will cut the list to five at the end of the summer.

“At the end of August, I’ll cut my list to five and start setting trip dates,” Kirk said. “Two schools I know will be on there are Texas A&M and USC and you can throw Ohio State in there too.

“I still need to figure out the last two but those three will definitely get official visits. I want to try and take all five trips if I can but if I can’t and I feel I’m ready, I’ll go ahead and do it early.”

*Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman wide out Cordell Broadus is planning a Signing Day decision.

“I want to do all my official visits and then I’ll make a commitment on Signing Day. I’m not in any hurry and I’m not planning to rush anything. I want to take my time and really enjoy the process.

“I know I want to visit Florida State and Notre Dame but I’m not sure about anyone else yet. I’ll take unofficial visits to UCLA and USC and I would love to visit Arizona State too. UCLA and ASU are recruiting me harder than anyone right now but I don’t have a leader, everyone is even.”

*Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley offensive lineman Dru Samia was planning to go through the process but said he’s now moving up his commitment timeline.

“I took a lot of trips and did some camps and it has been a tiring process,” Samia said. “I want to move up my date but still need to sit down and talk things over with my family first.

“UCLA is definitely recruiting me the hardest right now. I feel at home there and I really like Coach Klemm a lot. I still want to visit Oklahoma and Texas is showing new interest as well. OU hasn’t offered but hopefully they would if I visited. They didn’t make any promises but it’s a good school and I have interest there as well.”

*Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei linebacker Ben Humphreys is planning to cut his list to five at the end of the summer.

“I just camped at Stanford and USC and those went well,” Humphreys said. “I’m waiting to hear back from the coaches but they’re on vacation right now. I’m not really worried about it though, I have some other good options.

“I’ll cut my list to five in August and Washington and Duke will for sure make the cut. I don’t know about the other three spots yet. I’m going to take at least two official visits and will see where things are at after those. If new schools come in I could take a few more trips so I’m just going to play it by ear.”

*Salt Lake City (Utah) Brighton linebacker Osa Masina has a top right and will make a cut to five very shortly.

“I plan on cutting my list to five by end of the week, probably Saturday or Sunday,” Masina said. “I can’t say who looks good to make it right now, it could be any of my top eight so just have to wait and see.

“As for my visits, my plan is to take all five and then commit at the Army Game but if I know before then, I’ll go ahead and make it sooner. I won’t delay it and take all five if after my second or third trip, I just know that’s the place for me.”
