Battle talks Duke offer and USA Camp

How did the offer from head coach Mike Krzyzewski impact Tyus Battle’s recruitment? We asked the five star guard about that and his progress at Team USA’s U17 tryouts. Read on for the latest on Battle and his recruitment.

How has the camp gone for you?

Tyus Battle: It’s been going great, playing against the best competition in the country has been great. We’ve been getting after each other.

How did having the college coaches there today watching you guys affect things?

It’s good, we see them during the live period at places like Peach Jam, so I’m used to it. It’s just really great to being out here. I try not to look in the stands too much though.

How is it for you being a veteran of sorts with USA Basketball?

Really I’m just trying to stay aggressive, play my game and compete in all the sessions and games. I try to make an impact every time I’m on the floor wherever I’m playing.

Who do you have good relationships with at camp?

Lot of guys, Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum, Derryck (Thornton Jr), Thomas Bryant, a lot of guys. I’m rooming with V.J. King and Derryck Thornton.

From what I understand, your dad is playing a big role in advising you on your recruitment, is that correct?

Yeah, that’s right. My dad and I talk about it a lot, and discuss the different schools. I haven’t narrowed anything down yet, but we do a lot of talking about schools.

Who have you built a good relationship so far with coaches wise?

A lot of the coaches, Kenny Johnson, and the coaches from the Louisville staff, a lot of the coaches from the Michigan staff, Ohio State, one of the coaches from Kentucky, and Duke as well. I talk with assistant coach Jon Scheyer a lot.

What was it like for you receiving the recent Duke offer?

It was a great thing, and such a great honor. It’s a very high level program that has put a lot of guys in the NBA and they have a great coach in Coach K.

What had the communication been like with you and your dad with the Duke staff prior to the offer?

Me and my dad had talked with them for awhile before it happened. Since then I have talked with Coach Scheyer a lot. They called at Peach Jam and they offered. I talked with Coach K, who is just a really good guy, a really good guy.

How did the Coach K conversation go?

It went real well, we talked a lot about my game, and he told me some things that I do well. He said that I was a guy he could see playing three different positions - the 1 through the 3, that’s what he was recruiting as and he also said that I was a really good on-ball defender. That was one of the things he was recruiting me as and he liked my game on the floor. When he offered me, he said that we’re really going to be recruiting you hard and after Peach Jam, they were really going to keep in contact with me quite a bit.

What are your thoughts on the timing of the Duke offer?

It’s fine you know because i talked to them a lot before that. It’s a really great program, one of the best in the country.

How did the Duke offer impact your recruitment now that you have it?

At this point I”m still wide open, I’m taking my time with this whole process. But, Duke’s a great school.

What’s the plan moving forward for you visits wise in the future?

Nothing right now.  I’m going to take some time.
