Coach Cut: "We can be better"

Head coach David Cutcliffe met the media on Tuesday afternoon ahead of his team’s trip to Pittsburgh for a key conference showdown.

OPENING STATEMENT
?“It’s good to get back into a game week. I thought last week our work was really good. We worked a lot on Duke. I thought our coaches did a great job in that regard. We did get some good quality work on Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh poses a lot of challenges on both sides of the ball. They’re such a physical football team. The biggest thing for us is finding some consistency in all aspects. I think we’ve had, as we look at the season after the second open date, good moments in kicking, defensively and offensively as well. The thing that we’ve got to do starting with this Saturday – and November is when you do it – is be a consistent football team.”

ON LAST YEAR’S GAME VS. PITT
?“A 58-55 loss is tough. Pitt separated from us a couple of times in that game and we fought back. I think we learned something about our team in that game. It won’t have anything to do with this football game except we realized how good they are.”

ON THE COURSE OF THIS YEAR
?“I think we can be a much better team than we’ve been. For us to be a very good football team we’ve got to shore up and be cleaner.”

ON PITT
?“We’re not going to be as big as they are. So technique becomes important; pad leverage becomes important on both sides of the ball and the line of scrimmage; effort becomes important. You’re not going to tackle a 250-pound tailback unless you have great technique. That’s just a fact. Their defensive front is physical. Their linebackers are physical.”

ON LAST YEAR’S LOSSES TO GT & PITT
?“There was a lot of surprise and shock. Our team, those two games kind of hit us in the face and surprised some of our seniors. I don’t know if it was an outlier, but it was certainly a motivator for us moving forward. We had to slowly kind of right the ship. We were able to do it. This game is completely different. I think this Pitt team is more equipped at this stage maybe than they were a year ago.”
