Okafor Named ACC Freshman of the Week

Duke freshman wins first weekly rookie honor of the season.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The conference office announced the first league honors of the 2014-15 season Monday afternoon, with Duke freshman center Jahlil Okafor earning the first ACC Freshman of the Week honor of his college career. Okafor joined Montrezl Harrell of Louisville, who was named ACC Player of the Week, in receiving the weekly league accolade, which is voted on by a selected panel of media.

Okafor impressed in his first two contests as a Blue Devil, averaging 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game, while helping guide Duke to victories over Presbyterian and Fairfield. In Duke’s season opener against Presbyterian, Okafor scored 19 points on a near-perfect 9-of-10 shooting performance from the floor to lead the Blue Devils to a 113-44 win. The Chicago, Ill., native followed his debut by shooting an efficient 8-of-10 from the floor against Fairfield, netting 17 points in the process. Okafor’s combined 17-of-20 (.850) from the field currently ranks second in the ACC, and his 18.0 ppg. ranks first among freshmen in the conference.

The Blue Devils return to competition Tuesday, traveling to Indianapolis, Ind., to face Michigan State in the State Farm Champions Classic. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip, with live coverage on ESPN.
