Arizona State vs. Duke
Quick Thoughts on Arizona State: ASU was on its way to a huge season winning eight of its first nine games, and then the finishing kick was a problem losing to Oregon State and Arizona to miss out on a shot at the Pac-12 title. Even so, the offense has been fantastic and the passing game is dangerous, but this is an entertaining team that doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, is good against the run, and puts points on the board in bunches. A bowl win and a ten-win campaign might not be the same as a Pac-12 South title, but it would still be a success.
Quick Thoughts on Duke: Just when it looked like Duke was going to take the Coastal title, it started losing with a rough 17-16 defeat to Virginia Tech followed up by a blowout loss to North Carolina. Even so, the team usually found ways throughout the year to win tight, close games with a timely offense and helped by a surprisingly strong pass defense. Resourceful, Duke doesn’t panic late, but if it gets down early there will be a big problem.
First Reaction: It might be easy to think that Duke has no shot if Arizona State is fired up and looking to make a statement, but the team has been in this sort of position before. The Blue Devils have some scoring punch of its own, and there’s no questioning what head coach David Cutcliffe might be able to come up with. Even so this has the potential to be ugly.
Early Prediction: Arizona State 48 … Duke 20
