Daniel Jones, a 6-foot-4, 200 pound signal caller out of Charlotte (N.C.) Latin School has committed to Duke as a member of the 2015 recruiting class. However, he's done so without a scholarship offer...at least for now.
Jones will gray shirt, meaning he will not be on scholarship for the first year of his eligibility - a likely redshirt season - but will be added as a scholarship player the following year.
Schools such as Wake Forest, North Carolina, and Boston College entertained Jones throughout the recruiting process, but none were able to workout scholarship numbers. ivy League power Princeton eventually earned a verbal commitment, but Jones decided to continue to look around. That's allowed Duke to get further involved, and while the Blue Devils weren't able to find a scholarship in the class of 2015, the coaches kept recruiting him throughout the cycle and recently hosted Jones for a visit in mid December.
That visit turned the trick and Jones decided to take the offer of a gray shirt.
Jones is coming off a strong senior campaign at Latin where he earned Quarterback of the Year honors in the talent rich Charlotte area. For the season he threw for more than 2300 yards in leading Latin to the state championship game where the Hawks fell to 2016 Duke commit Elijah Deveaux and Charlotte Christian.
