Meet the NEW Devils: Zach Morris

Signing Day profile of the Duke's three star defensive tackle commitment

Zach Morris
Ringgold (Ga.) Ringgold High
Three stars
Committed on November 16, 2013

Vitals: 6-foot-4, 265 pounds

Recruitment: The three star prospect chose the Blue Devils over interest from Kentucky, Mississippi State, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt. Morris was quick to commit after visiting for the 2013 game against North Carolina Central and then again on November 15th after Duke beat Miami in Durham.

"Coach Cutcliffe is not only bringing the players together as a cohesive unit, but also giving them a real sense of family and the most impressive thing I've seen is how invested the fans and the student body have become, and how they've rallied around the team. You could really see it [against Miami] when the team was down early, but the fans really helped drive them to victory."

Following the decision, Morris continually shot down preliminary interest from other schools and remained firm in his commitment for more than a year.

Early Impact: Morris has played on the end of the defensive line for a good portion of his career, and is rated as a defensive end by Scout. However, look for him to move inside and play defensive tackle for Duke. He’ll enter the program as one of, if not the strongest player in his freshman class. He’ll spend at least a season if not more adding weight before entering the rotation at DT

Scout Take: Morris is a powerful lineman who uses his strength and power to push linemen back. His style of going forward instead of laterally and cutting back and forth will be more of an asset once he transitions into the middle of the line. The first few seasons will allow him work not only on adding weight, but improving flexibility and his initial burst.
