Meet the NEW Devils: Jordan Hayes

Signing Day profile of the Duke's three star defensive back commitment

Jordan Hayes
Loganville (Ga.) Grayson HS
No. 11 S in Georgia, Three stars
Committed on January 6, 2014

Vitals: 6-foot-0, 175 pounds

Recruitment: A very early commitment, Hayes selected Duke over South Florida Wake Forest, and Cincinnati. The decision came within a week of South Florida making their scholarship offer. The difference was the love Hayes received from David Cutcliffe's staff in the recruiting process.

"(Duke) just felt like family to me," Hayes said. "When I went up there, there was a lot of love and stuff like that. It felt like it was the right place for me."

Hayes continued to listen to other schools and coaches for a while, however after the middle of September his commitment firmed up. From there Hayes was named to the Semper Fi game where he played well, picking up a second half interception. But it was during the week where he solidified his ranking status as one of the better safeties in talent rich Georgia.

Early Impact: Hayes is a sure bet to redshirt in the deep Duke secondary, though like those who have come before him, his talents and skill set will likely lead to him being on the two-deep within two seasons. Before he gets into the secondary, however, look for Hayes to make his earliest contributions on special teams.

Scout Take: Reacts well to the play and can cover ground to meet the ball carrier. In coverage he’s very good at reading the offense and has developed the reputation of being able to break up passes with well timed, hard hitting. In the run game, Hayes displays a willingness to engage and is a very good tackler. To completely translate that skill to the college level will require more strength and weight.
