Meet the NEW Devils: Twazanga Mugala

Signing Day profile of the Duke's two star defensive end commitment

Twazanga Mugala
Charlotte (N.C.) Ardrey Kell HS
Two stars
Committed on January 18, 2015

Vitals: 6-foot-3, 215 pounds

Recruitment: Mugala committed to Purdue in October, but kept his options open and reached out to Duke in November to gauge interest. From there the Blue Devils passively recruited him before the two sides agreed to a visit in January.

On that visit the Blue Devils made a scholarship offer and Mugala quickly pounced on it. Other schools involved included Army, Navy, and Connecticut.

Early Impact: Being able to land Mugala late in the process is great for the Blue Devils. He’s a good prospect with a nice upside. Pass rushers are always important and that’s Mugala’s specialty. Mugala may not be as highly sought-after as other prospects in Duke’s 2015 class, but he has a lot of physical tools. He’s a long, athletic defensive lineman with a great motor. Although he will most likely redshirt next fall, I expect him to make an impact for the Blue Devils down the road, and ultimately become a good player at Duke. - Michael Clark, Regional Recruiting Analyst

Scout Take: At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Mugala has a great frame. He is very quick off the ball and does a nice job of using his hands to disengage from defenders.

At this point in his career, Mugala is at his best when rushing the passer, as he finished his senior season with 16.5 sacks. He is also solid against the run. But when he gets to college, getting stronger and adding weight to his frame will help him become even more effective in that area.

On top of his physical abilities, Mugala also has a high football I.Q. He does a nice job of playing fast, but under control and takes good angles when pursuing the football.

Like all players, Mugala can improve. The main areas as mentioned earlier are to get stronger and add weight. However, with his work ethic and the coaching he will receive at Duke, I expect him to quickly improve when he gets to the next level.
