Meet the NEW Devils: Trevon McSwain

Signing Day profile of the Duke's three star defensive end commitment

Trevon McSwain
Suwanee (GA) Lambert HS
No. 11 DE in Georgia, Three stars
Committed on June 17, 2014

Vitals: 6-foot-6, 225 pounds

Recruitment: McSwain has one of the healthier offer sheets of any Duke prospect. In June he picked the Blue Devils over offers from 14 other schools including East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Mississippi State, NC State, Nebraska, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Virginia.

"I am proud to announce that I will be taking my talents to Durham, NC and will be joining the Blue Devil family," he wrote on his Twitter account. "I made the decision last night at 8:00 PM. This is not just a four year decision, it is a 40 year decision that will not just better me as a player, but also as a role model."

Early Impact: Coach Cutcliffe prefers that all linemen - whether offensive or defensive - spend a year or two redshirting and preparing for the rigors of ACC play. McSwain will follow that line of development and planning. He needs to add at least 20 pounds to his frame and will get plenty of time to do so. We’d expect to see him factoring into the defensive end rotation by the beginning his redshirt sophomore season in Durham as a potential starter.

Scout Take: When talking McSwain, he is a 6-6, 219 pound rush end out of Suwanee Lambert. He is known for pursuing the quarterback.

McSwain is one that can close on the quarterback in a hurry once he gets around the edge. He takes long strides, he has very long arms, and he closes very well.

He has a solid first step and he can dip the shoulder to get past the offensive tackle on the outside. He is about speed and quickness right now.

Where he needs to develop most is his mass and his strength. He is a lean end who can struggle when it comes to holding his ground and playing the run. He also needs to play with better leverage and become more consistent when he fires off the ball.

He was timed in the low 5.0s in the 40 yard dash earlier this spring, but he shows good reaction quickness. McSwain has the frame to add good weight too.
