Meet the NEW Devils: Ben Humphreys

Signing Day profile of the Duke's four star linebacker commitment

Ben Humphreys
Santa Ana (Calif.) Cheshire Academy
No. 9 OLB in America | Four stars
Committed on July 19, 2014

Vitals: 6-foot-1, 205 pounds

Recruitment: Humphreys visited Duke over the summer and picked the Blue Devils in July over a slew of offers including Arizona, Arizona State, California, Colorado, Miami, Nebraska, Oregon State, Washington, Wisconsin, and others.

Following the commitment the Blue Devils had to fight off west coast teams - particularly the Washington Huskies who continued to recruit Humphreys well into the fall. By the time the US Army game rosters were out, the rest of the country had backed off and things had completely solidified. Along the way he had raised his stock and very nearly made his way into the list of the 100 best prospects in the country regardless of position. At the USAA game we asked him about upping Duke’s profile.

“It’s been fun, coming out and representing my team,” said Humphreys. “It’s awesome down here. It’s a whole new level. After we got adjusted in the first practice, once we got in to it, it was fun.”

Duke has had a number of players in the McDonalds All-American Basketball Game, but having a player in an All-American football game is pretty rare air.

And the Blue Devils have a pair of commits in San Antonio.

“Myself and T.J. Rahming are both here and committed to Duke,” said Humphreys. “It’s huge for Duke. The coaches are all excited and told us they will all be watching on Saturday. I talked to Coach (Jeffrey) Faris, my recruiter, and he’s excited for us. And we are excited where the program is going and I think this points to where we should be next year and the year after.”

Early Impact: Humphreys will immediately push for time as the team’s outside linebacker. He probably won’t begin the season as a starter, but you’d be hard pressed to find many analysts who believe he won’t be on the initial two-deep. He’ll enroll in mid-May and will have over three months to add some needed weight and strength to his frame, but we would be somewhat surprised to see him on the redshirt list in 2015.

Scout Take: Humphreys is the definition of a football player, he just knows how to play the game. His instincts are unmatched and he’s one of those guys that just seems to be a step ahead of everyone else on the field. He's a very good all around athlete with above average cover skills. He’s physically tough, can play in space and rush the passer. He ‘s a natural leader and easily one of the most under-rated prospects in the region - Greg Biggins
