Duke was first; still active for Gilbert

One of the top defensive backs on the board in 2016 is Fayetteville (N.C.) Sanford High standout Mark Gilbert. For quite a while now Gilbert has been highly recruited by the Blue Devils, and Duke seems to be making a mark along with several other high majors.

“Recently I’ve been able to visit Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest,” said 2016 defensive back Mark Gilbert. “I currently have scholarship offers from Duke, Boston College, Old Dominion, Georgia Southern, NC State, Wake Forrest, Pitt, West Virginia and Michigan.”

The Michigan offer is the most recent, and the Wolverines will no doubt present a daunting challenge for any program.

“I was actually really excited.  It being Big Ten football… that’s one of the higher levels.  That’s one of the biggest stages.  Not putting down the ACC because that’s also a great conference, but Big Ten is (big time).”

On the opposite end of the recruiting timeline spectrum is Duke.

“Yeah, Duke was my first offer, and they have kept up the recruitment of me since then. They are one of the schools recruiting me the hardest, and they’ve let me know I’m one of the top guys on their board. They want met come in and stay at corner.”

As he’s gone through the process, Gilbert has begun to develop an awareness of how coaches view him as a prospect.

“I’d say my strengths would be coverage, playing the ball in the air, and tackling. A weakness, I would say, is just being more a leader in the field. Being more vocal with the play calls and adjustments on the field”

The Blue Devils had Gilbert in for a visit just a few weeks ago when the basketball team hosted North Carolina. Soon after, Duke had Gilbert back on campus for practice on February 21st. At the moment he doesn’t have any more visits planned, though he is looking to make several in the spring and summer with no end in sight for the recruiting process.

“Right now I'm just enjoying the process. I like going to these schools talking to the coaches seeing the facilities and other heavily recruited players. Picking the right school is important and I will choose the school I think is the best fit for me.”
