Vrankovic: "It's a Dream Come True"

Shortly after receiving his scholarship offer Antonio Vrankovic made his college decision by committing to head coach Mike Krzyzewski and Duke. We spoke with the 6-foot-11 center shortly afterwards to get the scoop on the night’s events.

It seems like there’s big news in your recruitment…

Antonio Vrankovic: I’m really doing great man, it’s a dream come true, I’m going to be a Duke Blue Devil.

So how did it go down?

The offer was there like the whole time, ever since my unofficial visit. It was just the fact that I had to talk with the Dean of Admissions and after talking with him, I decided to go ahead and decide.

What was it like communicating with the Duke staff today?

After talking with the Duke Dean of Admissions, I called Coach K and told him that I had made my decision and he was really happy about it, the whole staff talked with me, it’s just been a great day. Duke’s been a dream school of mine ever since I first started playing basketball, so just the fact that I had the possibility to play there was exciting and I’m excited for my opportunity. To me it was a no-brainer and I saw it for myself when I went on my unofficial visit there, I saw the facilities and everything and I just fell in love with it. It was just a matter of time before I knew I was going to make my commitment.

Coach K and the staff were just really happy, they’ve lost a few players to the Draft and they are very excited to have me. They are just coming off a National Championship and I’m so excited to be going to such a higher place.

Have you discussed with the Duke staff whether they expect you to play right away or will you guys be examining a potential redshirt year to start?

It’s all going to get decided once I get there, I’ll be there in July and start getting into the program and I’ll be trying to prove that I can play. If I need to take a redshirt year then I’ll take a redshirt year, we’ll just see what happens.

What did your conversation with Duke’s Dean of Admissions cover?

It was good, we had about a 15 minute conversation about personal stuff like my schooling, some education stuff like what I would want to major in, how my transition from Europe to here was and stuff about my family, it was a great conversation.

With fulfilling a life-long dream of becoming a Duke Blue Devil—what was going through you mind as you offered your commitment to Coach K?

It’s great, finally the whole process is over and I now know where I’m going to college and I have to keep working harder, have to be ready to help and to compete. It’s a blessing from God, I’ve worked so long for this and a lot of people in my school have been asking me where I was going to be going to college and now I can finally say that I’m going to Duke. It’s truly a blessing.

How did your family and friends and coaches react to the news ?

They were all really happy, my mom actually cried and my dad was really happy. My friends were excited too, actually a lot of them are texting me right now haha. I’m looking forward to going up for summer school and meeting all the players, that’s the plan.
