DURHAM, N.C. – Duke senior running back Shaquille Powell has been named to the Watch List for the Doak Walker Award, an honor presented annually to the nation’s top running back.
The Doak Walker Award, now in its 26th year, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
Powell enters his senior year having played in 39 career games and rushed 224 times for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns while catching 27 passes for 248 yards and two scores.
A 5-10, 205-pound product from Las Vegas, Nev., Powell was an Academic All-ACC selection in 2014 after playing in 12 games with 11 starts. He rushed 134 times for 618 yards and two touchdowns while catching 18 passes for 154 yards and one score. He led Duke in rushing yardage, spearheading an offensive unit that boasted three backs with 400 or more yards and five players with two or more rushing TDs. Powell’s productivity helped the Blue Devils average 181.85 rushing yards per game, marking the program’s highest total since gaining 198.64 yards per contest in 1977.
Off the field, Powell has volunteered for the Duke Campus Cleanup, Durham Rescue Mission, Read with the Blue Devils and Christmas Gift Wrap initiatives.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists for the award. The Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote to determine the finalists. The committee will cast a second vote to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The Blue Devils bring back six returning starters on offense and six on defense from last season’s squad, which qualified for a bowl for the third straight season.
Duke opens the 2015 campaign at Tulane on Thursday, September 3. To order Duke season tickets, call (919) 681-BLUE or visit www.GoDuke.com/footballtix.
