FB Forecast: LB Tinashe Bere

Redshirt freshman linebacker will be part of a young solution on the second line of defense as Duke hopes to mitigate the loss of all-ACC middle linebacker Kelby Brown.

Redshirt Freshman

2014 Review
Bere came in and established himself as a weight room warrior, taking home the Sonny Falcone Iron Duke Award, a team honor presented annually to one offensive player, one defensive player and one player in the developmental program for their year-round commitment to strength training and conditioning.

2015 Preview
With the injury to Kelby Brown, Bere is slotted as the primary backup at middle linebacker behind new starter, Zavier Carmichael. Given the new role for his recruiting classmate, it’s likely that Bere will see significant time this season as both he and Carmichael work on a steep and immediate learning curve. Bere is a bit bigger and stronger than Carmichael, and may factor in early as a run stuffer in short yardage situations.

TDD Projection
Inexperience is the name of the game at linebacker for Duke this season with Carmichael, Bere, and weak side linebackers Dwayne Norman and Chris Holmes have a combined two years of experience at the position in the program. It means that each player in the rotation(s) will need to quickly pick up the defensive scheme while also performing well enough to solidify his spot. Bere could very well be a guy who ends up pushing towards a starting spot by the middle of the season.

How he ended up in Durham
Rated as a three star prospect, Bere picked Duke over eight other offers including Cincinnati, Illinois, Iowa and Purdue. He came in projected merely as a linebacker, but eventually was steered towards the MIKE position.
