FB Forecast: S Evrett Edwards

Our player by player preview continues with one of the top recruits from the class of 2013, Everett Edwards. After an early career position change, Edwards began to see more and more time at the end of last season, but the depth and talent in the Duke backfield could have his climb up the depth chart on hold.

Evrett Edwards

5-foot-11 / 190 pounds

High School:
Woodbridge (VA) / Woodbridge

Redshirt Sophomore

2014 Review
When he enrolled early at Duke many believed Edwards could see time as a true freshman at cornerback. Instead he redshirted during the 2013 season before making his debut as a reserve safety in 2014. Last season he appeared in 12 games and recorded 20 tackles in 261 plays as the Bandit position in Duke’s 4-2-5. His best game came against Pittsburgh where he registered seven stops in Duke’s victory over the Panthers.

2015 Preview
As with most of the backfield reserves, Edwards may have to deal with the glass ceiling imposed by a group rated as one of the top positional groups in the country. In this case, starter Dondre Singleton stands in the way of Edwards pushing further up the depth chart in the immediate future.

TDD Projection
A season ago Singleton and Edwards split the position on an 80/20 split in terms of snaps. We’d be surprised if that ratio changed much past a 75/25 split this season, though we do expect more than the 260 plays he recorded a season ago especially since Edwards seemed to log big minutes in the last few games of last year.

How he ended up in Durham
Edwards was considered one of the prizes of the class of 2013 after he picked Duke over offers from Penn State, Illinois, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Maryland, and Arizona State among others. He enrolled in January of 2013.
