Jela Duncan Out Indefinitely

The injury bug has hit early in the season for the second straight year in Durham as the Blue Devils announced several injuries and subsequent roster changes on Tuesday morning.

Redshirt junior running back Jela Duncan has been ruled out of action indefinitely after suffering a torn right pectoral muscle during Monday’s workouts according to Duke Sports Information Department. In addition, backup running backs Joseph Ajeigbe and Shaun Wilson have been sidelined with minor injuries that will keep them out of contact.

With the loss of three running backs, Duke has reassigned redshirt freshman Nico Pierre from quarterback to running back.

“Just when you feel comfortable with four experienced running backs on the depth chart, three of them are in the training room,” said head coach David Cutcliffe. “Jena’s injury is obviously disappointing because we know how hard he’s worked to get back into the tick of things following two shoulder surgeries.”

The Blue Devil head coach also noted that neither Ajeigbe or Wilson are expected to be long term issues.

After redshirting and serving as the team’s scout team signal caller a season ago, Pierre’s move to the backfield will relieve some roster congestion under center and will create a battle for the third string role between true freshmen Quentin Harris and Daniel Jones.

“I’m really proud of Nico and how he’s handled this situation,” said Cutcliffe. “With his unselfishness and commitment to this program, he is displaying the traits of the ultimate teammate.”

As if the offensive injuries weren’t enough to note, Duke has also announced that junior cornerback Bryon Fields will miss an undisclosed, but extended time of camp due to a leg injury. In his place will be true sophomore Alonzo Saxton, who appeared in eight games last season.
