Continuing the player by player preview of the 2015 Duke Blue Devils with a look at this sophomore defensive back

Zach Muniz

5-foot-11 / 170 pounds

High School:

Chesterfield (MO) / Christian Brothers College

2014 Review

Muniz joined Alonzo Saxton as true freshman defensive backs who avoided a redshirt in 2014.  He appeared in 12 of the 13 games a season ago and played a total of 140 snaps.  In those contests he saw spot duty and recorded seven stops.

2015 Preview

Muniz finds himself charted as the top reserve behind Breon Borders in the preseason depth chart and has pushed the starter throughout camp.  He’s unlikely to win the job, but as Saxton proved by taking over from Bryon Fields after Fields was sidelined earlier this month, you’re only one snap away from being pushed into the limelight.

TDD Projection

Muniz will continued to serve as Borders’ understudy while also working to hold off freshman Jeremy McDuffie for the second string spot.  We’d expect Borders to play out this season and next as the starter before Muniz has a chance to move up.  And that’s assuming he maintains his role as the No. 2 this year.  In the more immediate sense, we’d expect him to log closer to 200-250 snaps this season.

How he ended up in Durham

Muniz committed to Duke in early August over a number of offers. He turned down Ball State, Cincinnati, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Bowling Green, New Mexico, Arkansas State, and Miami of Ohio.

He visited Duke in December as part of the first big commitment recruiting weekend.

"The first day we went out to eat with all of the coaches, hosts, recruits, and all of our parents, and that was fun to get to first talk to and get to know everybody. The next day we were in meetings about the academics and doing tours of the facilities. Then, on the second night, we went to Coach Cutcliffe's house to have a huge dinner and hang out with him. That was awesome."
