FB Forecast: RB Shaun Wilson

The player by player preview of the 2015 Duke Blue Devils rolls along with a look at, perhaps, the most explosive player on the roster, Shaun Wilson.

Shaun Wilson

5-foot-9 / 180 pounds

High School:

Charlotte (NC) / West Mecklenburg

2014 Review

In one of the more impressive performances by a freshman in recent memory, Wilson took home honorable mention Freshman All-American honors from College Football News.  He rushed 78 times for 598 yards and five touchdowns.  Of course the biggest game of the year was against Kansas where Wilson rushed 12 times for a Duke single-game record 245 yards and three TDs while catching one pass for seven yards in a 41-3 win

2015 Preview

Wilson began camp as the top reserve behind Shaquille Powell.  Of course their games are very different and Duke uses each in different ways.  Despite some injuries throughout camp that kept him sidelined, there’s no worry that he won’t be ready to go against Tulane when Duke opens the season.

TDD Projection

Wilson will likely see his role increase this year with Duke looking to get him the ball in space.  That means he’ll likely catch more balls out of the backfield in addition to an increased workload with handoffs, etc.  With a year in the Duke strength program, Wilson is probably better prepared to deal with the grind of the long season than he was a season ago.  If he stays healthy, he could end up being Duke’s top all purpose yardage back.

How he ended up in Durham

Wilson and Duke were aware of each other for the better part of two years, but things didn't start moving overly quick until the latter half of September. That's when the Blue Devils finally made the offer and the three star RB committed within 72 hours.

"Really, they offered me around three days before I made a decision," said Wilson. "I wasn't thinking about committing so quickly, but I prayed about it and it was really clear that Duke was the only place for me."

Wilson chose Duke over offers from Appalachian State, East Carolina, Louisville, Marshall, Toledo, and Wake Forest. He had also fielded late  interest from schools such as NC State, South Carolina, and Clemson.
