Takeaways: Duke 9, Boston College 7

It wasn’t pretty, and there was a lot of drama, but in the end Duke moved to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the ACC by defeating Boston College 9-7.  Here are our takeaways from Saturday’s big victory.

FINAL SCORE

Duke 9
Boston College 7

Offensive Player of the Game

K - Ross Martin

Martin provided all of Duke’s scoring for this game against Boston College.  All of his field goals came in the first half scoring on attempts from 36, 38, and 53 yards.  Martin is a perfect 9-9 on his field goal attempts and has scored a total of 41 points so far for Duke.  He has the confidence of his team mates and the coaching staff to be a powerful and reliable weapon for the Blue Devils.

Honorable Mention

QB - Thomas Sirk

Thomas Sirk saw improvement in his passing game against the Eagles.  He had a 50% accuracy on his pass attempts connecting on 18-36 for 195 yards against a very tough Eagles defense.  He spread the ball around a little more in this game hitting 9 different backs and receivers including a 29 yard pass to freshman T. J. Rahming.

Defensive Player of the Game

LB - Dwayne Norman

Dwayne Norman was the only member of the tough Blue Devil Defensive unit to get double figures in the tackle category against Boston College.  Eight of his tackles were solo and he was credited with 2 QB hurries and a pass break up.  Norman’s position change to LB this year may be one of the most important coaching decisions for Coach David Cutcliffe’s staff this season.  Norman and Jeremy Cash appear to be closer to the ball on every play an opposing offense runs.

Honorable Mention

DE - Kyler Brown

Kyler Brown made several big stops for Duke against BC.  He had 6 total tackles where 2 were solo and he assisted on 4 others.  He was credited with 1.5 tackles for loss totaling 5 yards.

Plays of the Game

Not many times would you say a field goal in the first half was the deciding factor of a game.  Ross Martin booted a 53 yard FG into the wind with room to spare with 3:40 left in the 2nd quarter.  The score by Martin would provide the points needed by the end of the game for Duke to pull out their 2nd ACC victory of the season.

Next Week

The Duke Blue Devils will travel to West Point, New York to take on the Knights of Army.  Duke carries a 4-1 (2-0) schedule into the game as Army has a 1-4 record with their lone win against Eastern Michigan.  The game has a 12 pm noon start and can be seen on the CBS Sports Network.
