Duke Opens Exhibition Season In Style

Six players scored in double figures and Duke shot 53 percent from the field en route to an easy exhibition victory over defending Division II National Champion Florida Southern on Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Freshman Derryck Thornton bounced back from a subpar debut at Countdown to Craziness to lead all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting as the Blue Devils blew out Florida Southern, 112-68 to open the 2015-2016 exhibition season.

The freshman point guard got a lot of help from his teammates as well as classmates Brandon Ingram (16 points) and Luke Kennard (14) joined starters Amile Jefferson (13), Marshall Plumlee (14), Matt Jones (15) in double figures.

In addition to lighting up the scoreboard, the Blue Devils were also dominant on the glass, out-rebounding the Moccasins 55-29 overall.  Duke also limited Florida Southern to just 39 percent shooting from the field and 28 percent from long range.

Jefferson finished the game with a double-double, pulling in 12 rebounds, while Plumlee added nine.

The outcome was never in doubt as the Blue Devils rolled to a 10-0 lead within the first 90 seconds and would never be seriously challenged the rest of the way.

Duke returns to action to conclude the exhibition season on Wednesday night when Livingstone will come to town for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
