Following the mid-season dismissals of three players, room has opened in the class of 2016 for a handful of players. Three of them will be on campus this weekend - and all at a position of need.
Lucas has offers from more than a dozen FBS offers with schools such as Minnesota Nebraska, Tennessee, Cal, Colorado, Colorado State, Michigan, and Oregon State among others. Still, he’s named Duke as the strongest program in his recruitment for quite a while and credits the Blue Devil coaches as developing the strongest relationship.
Lucas, who wants to major in computer science, will be hosted by current defensive lineman Edgar Cerenord and is being recruited by Coach Derek Jones.
Chidi Okonya was committed to Tennessee back in May, but since that time he has kept an open mind about Duke and, potentially, other schools as well. He de-committed from Tennessee last week and then set up the official visit to Durham this weekend. He sports a 4.0-plus GPA and projects as a very early impact player on the edge of the defensive line.
Okonya has said he wants to pursue a degree in business and will be hosted by freshman defensive end Marquies Price. Like Lucas, his primary recruiter is Coach Jones.
Sammons has been one of the top targets on the board for the duration of this recruiting cycle. The 6-foot-6, 260 pounder has been recruited by virtually all the high major programs from the midwest to the east coast. Recently he’s visited Oregon and Michigan State officially and will return to Duke for another visit - his third in the last year - this weekend.
Sammons is different than other recruits because he did not watch college football as a youngster. In fact, he has only played the game for a couple seasons.
"It has been difficult for me to play football," he told Scout's Dave Berk, "but when I stepped on the field, I said 'it's amazing to play football so I just go 100% keep doing what I have to do and keep learning how to play football because it is my goal to be an NFL player."
Sammons is a projected engineering major and will be hosted by Tinashe Bere this weekend. His primary recruiting coach is John Latina.
Duke is also hosting a number of committed prospects this weekend as well, which has become a tradition with the Duke coaching staff. Here’s a complete list of who is coming to Durham…
