Brandon Ingram scored a game high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace Duke to a comfortable 81-64 win over Boston College in the ACC opener for each team.
Once again the Blue Devils beat an opponent with a balanced attack that saw Duke put four players in double figures. Grayson Allen scored 17 points along with nine rebounds and five assists while Luke Kennard added 17 points and Matt Jones had 16.
With only one rotational player with experience in a large role in ACC play, Duke’s inexperience may have played role in a slow start. Boston College jumped out to a 12-6 lead over the first seven mantes of the game before a 7-0 run gave Duke its first lead of the game on an Allen breakaway dunk.
The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes to make it 18-17 before Duke’s continued drives to the basket resulted in a number of fouls. Over the next few minutes the Blue Devils hit eight straight free throws to open up a nine point advantage before ultimately leading 37-24 at the half.
Duke opened up the lead to as many as 21 with 11 minutes remaining before Boston College scored 10 unanswered points over 90 seconds to cut the lead to 57-46. However, another trip to the free throw line and a three point play by Allen put the game away.
The win improved Duke to 12-2 on the season and 1-0 in the ACC. It was the program’s 28th win in 36 conference openers under head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Next up for the Blue Devils will be a second straight road game as Duke travels to Winston Salem to face Wake Forest.
