Recruiting Recap: Lucas officially visited Durham in December, and made his decision to commit on the final day of the trip.

The three-star prospect had offers from more than a dozen FBS offers with schools such as Minnesota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Cal, Colorado, Colorado State, Michigan, and Oregon State among others.

Still, he named Duke as the leader in his recruitment for quite a while and credits the Blue Devil coaches as developing the strongest relationship.

Coach Derek Jones was instrumental in Lucas’ recruitment as was former offensive coordinator Montgomery, who left for ECU.

Projected Position: Defensive End

2016 Projection: Given the concerns with depth and production from the edge of the defensive line from a season ago, it’s no surprise that most observers feel at least one of the true freshmen could challenge for a spot on the two-deep following Fall Practice. Lucas was a somewhat late development on the national recruiting front, but parlayed a strong camp circuit into a lot of high major interest. Ideally he’ll redshirt, but as with the other young pass rushers, there’s more opportunity than at other positions (primarily out of need of production) heading into the summer.

Quotable: “My strengths are my athleticism and my overall natural ability. I think my strength and my speed will translate to college game early on. Also, I think I have to work on getting even faster and my change if direction.”
