Meet The New Devils 2016 - DB Mark Gilbert

Get to know the newest Blue Devils as we go player-by-player in the recruiting class of 2016 with analysis, projections, videos, and more.

Recruiting Recap: Gilbert was one of the more noticeable commitments of the entire class. Not only because the three star cornerback was a very good talent, but because he was also the top rated cornerback in the state. And, with such distinction came a big recruiting battle among the local programs.

In the end, Gilbert picked Duke over offers from Boston College, Louisville, Michigan, NC State, North Carolina, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and West Virginia.

That he committed to Coach Cutcliffe's program was a culmination of a long recruiting process in which the Blue Devils were early to the party, and the last to leave as Gilbert previously told TDD.

"Duke was my first offer, and they have kept up the recruitment of me since then. They’ve let me know I’m one of the top guys on their board. They want met come in and stay at corner.”

Projected Position: Cornerback

2016 Projection: Gilbert enrolled early to get an early start. With Duke suffering injury and departures in the defensive backfield, it’s not out of the question that Gilbert will push to find himself on the two-deep coming out of Fall Camp. We’ll know a good deal more after Spring practice breaks, and a lot of his status may be related to how well Bryon Field recovers and how good the coaches expect Dylan Singleton to be. If Fields isn’t ready and Singleton or other safeties are, then DeVon Edwards may remain at cornerback, which would put a cap on snaps available for a newcomer opposite of Breon Borders.

Quotable: “I’m a diehard corner. I go out every game with a chip of my shoulder, like I always have something to prove.”
