Duke out Front for 2017 DE Owen Carney

Schools out of the ACC and Big 12 have emerged as the front runners for highly-touted defensive end and 2017 Miramar (Fla.) standout, Owen Carney, who's closing in on double-digit scholarship offers.

Miramar (Fla.) High manufactured and delivered a highly-coveted defensive end that just recently signed with the Duke Blue Devils in Terrell Lucas, and is poised to draw similiar traffic to the school with the emergence of 2017 defensive end Owen Carney.

Carney, 6-foot-3.5, 225 pounds, is a gifted pass rusher that flashes impressive closing speed and athleticism when busting through the offensive line. Carney is a young man that certainly makes his presence known when making initial contact, and really does a nice job of having his motor switch turned on at all times.

Things are just getting started on the recruiting front, but the junior defensive lineman has already earned scholarship offers from Kansas StateDukeSyracuseWake ForestKentuckyIowa State and Florida International among others.

"Recruiting has been exciting," Carney said. "I think it has its ups and downs, but as of right now, I haven't experienced the downside yet when the real pressure comes on and I have to make that decision.

"I would say Duke and Kansas State (are sticking out)."

The one program that wasted no time offering and familiarizing themselves with the defensive lineman is the Duke Blue Devils, who offered and took a chance on Carney before anyone else.

David Cutcliffe's coaching staff recently dipped into Miramar to sign and close the deal with Terrell Lucas, and is hoping to hit the jackpot with Carney nearly a year from now as well.

"When Duke came down to see Terrell, I met with coach Cutcliffe and (cornerbacks) coach Derek Jones," Carney said. "Coach Jones is real cool and we talk to each other through Twitter, so we have a nice relationship."

It's not often when Kansas State steps foot into the Sunshine State to replenish their roster on the recruiting trail, so it didn't shock me once Carney told me he had connections to the Big 12 school

"I've been talking with (defensive ends) coach Blake Seiler through Twitter since November," Carney said. "I have a cousin (Da’Marrio Jackson-Smith) that plays on the team right now, and I have an uncle that attended Kansas State as well, so that's the connection there.

"But coach Seiler and I have a great relationship. I've been talking with him for about 4-5 months."

Carney, who plans to graduate early to become a mid-year enrollee, will be in attendance for Kentucky's spring game on April 16. Carney is also eyeing unofficial visits to Duke and Alabama.
