This Flordia defensive back has picked up a number of power five offers over the last few months including one from Duke. As the recruiting period began the Blue Devils were among the first programs to place a call to reaffirm their interest.
2017 athlete Marquis Waters of Delray Beach (Fla.) Atlantic High School currently counts offers from Iowa State, Duke, Nebraska, West Virginia, Wisconsin, UCF and Toledo among others.
The Blue Devils offered a while back, and have continued to assert their interest in Waters, and it seems to be working.
“I like Duke a lot because of what they stand for. Right now they stand in my top three. They offered me in early March. My overall top five is Duke, Virginia Tech, Central Florida, West Virginia, and Temple.”
At 6-feet and 192 pounds, Waters also boasts a 4.48 verified time in the forty and spend his junior season producing on both sides of the ball as both a running back and safety. On offense he carried the ball 92 times for 950 yards and 13 touchdowns. As a safety he recorded 40 tackles and added 1 interception, 7 deflections, 2 forced fumbles, and 15 tackles for loss.
That kind of production could allow Waters to play either position in college, but he’s got a preference.
“I’ll play defensive back in college. I like to hit more than getting hit, and defensive backs last longer than running backs in the game.”
For their part the Blue Devils appear to like Waters as a safety and continue to make their pitch consistently.
“My recruiting coach is Coach Matt [Guerrieri] and he’s a great coach. He always keeps in contact with me. He pretty much checks up on me every day.”
