DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior quarterback Thomas Sirk has been named to the 43-member Watch List for the 2016 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, announced on Thursday by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc.
Established in 1987, the Unitas Award is presented annually to the nation’s top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments. Candidates must by a college senior or fourth-year junior and on schedule to graduate with their class.
Sirk is one of seven ACC quarterbacks on the list joining Brad Kaaya (Miami), Sean Maguire (Florida State), Nate Peterman (Pittsburgh), Patrick Towles (Boston College), Mitch Trubinsky (North Carolina) and Deshaun Watson (Clemson).
During the 2015 season, Sirk completed 251-of-427 (.588) pass attempts for 2,625 yards with 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 803 yards and eight scores en route to amassing 3,428 total offensive yards, the second highest single-season total in Duke history, trailing only the 3,713 yards compiled by Anthony Dilweg in 1988.
Sirk, a 6-4, 220-pound native of Glen St. Mary, Fla., missed the contact portion of spring practice while recovering from surgery performed on February 10, 2016, to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon suffered the day before.
Sirk is one of three players in ACC history to record 800+ rushing yards and 2,500+ passing yards in a single season, joining Clemson’s Watson and North Carolina’s Marquise Williams, as all three QBs accomplished the feat during the 2015 campaign. Among active ACC quarterbacks, Sirk ranks second in rushing yards per attempt (4.96), tied for second in total TDs (35), third in rushing attempts (210), third in rushing yards (1,041), fourth in rushing yards per game (43.48), sixth in passing yards (2,692), sixth in total offensive yards (3,733), seventh in TD passes (19) and 10th in passing yards per game (112.17)
