Duke FB Names 2016 Season Captains

The program has announced its team captains for the upcoming season.

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe announced Saturday the naming of Jela DuncanDeVon EdwardsThomas Sirk and A.J. Wolf as team captains for the 2016 season.  The four redshirt seniors were elected by their teammates.

 

Duncan, a 5-10, 215-pound running back from Charlotte, N.C., has seen action in 36 career games and rushed 289 times for 1,575 yards and 11 touchdowns while catching 43 passes for 301 yards and one score.  In addition, he is one of five active players in the ACC with 1,500-plus rushing yards and 300-plus receiving yards.

 

Edwards, a 5-9, 180-pound safety from Covington, Ga., has 298 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 5.5 quarterback sacks, five interceptions, five caused fumbles, 21 pass breakups and six quarterback pressures in 40 career games.  In addition, the three-time All-America return specialist and 2015 Academic All-America pick has 72 career kickoff returns for 2,019 yards and six touchdowns.

 

Sirk, a 6-4, 220-pound quarterback from Glen St. Mary, Fla., was elected a team captain despite suffering a campaign-ending injury on Thursday evening.  Last season, his first as Duke’s starting quarterback, Sirk completed 251-of-427 (.588) passes for 2,625 yards with 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing for a team-best 803 yards and eight scores on 163 attempts.  He was named the co-MVP of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl after compiling 318 yards of total offense while rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for a third score in Duke’s 44-41 overtime win over Indiana.

 

Wolf, a 6-4, 280-pound defensive tackle from Greenwich, Conn., has played in 36 career games and registered 86 tackles including 5.5 tackles for loss.  A first team Academic All-America pick last season, Wolf earned the Mike McGee Award as Duke’s most outstanding defensive lineman in 2015.
