2006 Point Guard Breaks Out

Though the main concern regarding point guards of the future centers around the tandem of Illinois' Shaun Livingston and New York's Greg Paulus, there are a number of young players who are beginning to make a name for themselves on a national level. One of the more impressive members of the class of 2006 is Brother Martin High School standout Darryl Augustine.

Though he's the youngest member of the U-17 New Orleans Jazz, 6-foot-1 175 pound Darryl Augustine is probably one of the most talented players on the roster, not to mention in the class of 2006.

Possessing a great handle and terrific floor vision, Augustine was the most talked about young player at the annual Tournament of Champions where he routinely would knife his way through opposing defenses before handing off any number of passes.

During the event Augustine averaged 14 points, seven assists, and two steals despite playing against opponents who were nearly two years his elder. Though he could play against players his own age, Augustine says that he understands the benefits of playing at the U-17 level.

"It's good to play against the older guys for a number of reasons," he told TDD. "Mainly it makes me better and playing with the older team gets me a lot of exposure on the national level."

Indeed the exposure is slowly but surely beginning for him as he's already getting mail from a number of the nation's top programs including the Blue Devils. However, don't expect any early decisions.

"I haven't even thought about that yet. Basically I am just looking around at all of these tournaments and getting a feel for the different schools."

Despite the relative newness of the recruiting process, Augustine was willing to let TDD in on one factor that will influence his decision.

"I will tell you one thing though, I would like the chance to get away for college. And I'd like to play somewhere that has a reputation for helping players get better," Augustine said while looking up at the retired jerseys in Cameron.

The rest of the summer will see Darryl and the Jazz attending the Adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas along and a stop at the ABCD Camp.
