Smith, Wolfpack stun No. 17 Duke

Duke's final chance bounced off Jayson Tatum's foot and into the arms of Dennis Smith

DURHAM - With interim head coach Jeff Capel still tinkering with lineups and rotations the Blue Devils had trouble containing Dennis Smith Jr. all night.

With Grayson Allen and Luke Kennard coming off the bench the Blue Devils kept threatening to break this one open. But each time they did Smith was there with a big play. He was 10 for 18 from the floor and added six assists after the break. As a team the Wolfpack shot 55 percent.

With the freshman spotlight firmly on Harry Giles & Jayson Tatum it was Smith Jr who upstaged them all. When asked if this was something he dreamed of - punctuating a big win with a dunk - Smith stated

"I just dreamed of winning big games."

and later added

"A lot of people say it's an upset. But I planned on winning. I believe our team planned on winning."

Winning was something NC State hadn't done in Cameron Indoor since 1995. The last time back surgery turned Mike Krzyzewski into a spectator.

Still, despite the Smith show, the Blue Devils had a chance to tie the game. Maverick Rowan's missed free throw left the door open for Duke, but Tatum dribbled the ball harmlessly off his foot and into the waiting arms of Smith Jr.

Up next for the reeling Blue Devils is a trip to Wake Forest. Duke is 5-1 in their last six trips to Lawrence Joel.
