IC: 'Duke and Carolina are tied'

Don't be surprised if North Carolina ends up with Quentin Thomas – despite the fact that UNC and Duke are "neck-and-neck" for the services of top point guard Shaun Livingston.

According to Livingston's father, Reggie, the family has been told by Tar Heels coach Roy Williams that Thomas has been offered a scholarship. However, Williams also told the Livingston's that they would get one final shot to commit to UNC if Thomas was ready to pull the trigger.

"Quentin Thomas might already have his mind made up that he wants to go to North Carolina," Reggie said. "Roy said he will let us know and give Shaun a shot. I don't blame Roy and the staff for offering Quentin Thomas at all."

"I think Duke and Carolina are basically tied and it's going to come down to Quentin Thomas," Reggie Livingston said of his son's preference. "I also think that if a school presses Shaun, they'll be out of it. If they really want him, they'll wait."

That's not good news for Carolina fans because Williams can't afford to wait and miss out on Thomas as well – since the drop-off after Thomas is significant at the point guard spot.

Thomas, an athletic pass-first floor leader from Oakland Tech (Calif.) who reportedly is close to committing to North Carolina, will visit Kansas this weekend. The Jayhawks are also looking at other guards, including A.J. Price and Russell Robinson. Thomas is also considering Arizona State.

Livingston will almost definitely visit all four of his finalists. He returned from a trip to Duke this past weekend, went to UNC earlier this month and is scheduled to visit Arizona for Midnight Madness and Illinois the following weekend.

"North Carolina came in last night and he really likes them," Reggie Livingston said. "He's got a couple friends – JR (Smith) and Marvin (Williams) that are going there and I know Dwight Howard wants to go there, also."

"Roy Williams and Steve Robinson both came by and it went very well," he added. "Roy's a nice guy."

But the timetable may be UNC's biggest obstacle.
