Kaun heads to Duke; Decision Looms

As the word continues to circulate that Kansas holds a commanding lead over Duke in the pursuit of senior big man Alexander "Sasha" Kaun, the 7-footer's coach says that's only the case because Kaun has yet to visit Durham.

Well, all that will change this weekend when the Siberia native heads to Duke for his final visit.

``All he's been saying is that if he had to make a decision today, it'd be to Kansas because he knows the players and he's been there," Florida Air Academy (Fla.) coach Aubin Goporo said. "But he also said he wants to go to Duke and see the campus and then he'll decide."

While sources close to the situation maintain that it'll be difficult for Coach K and the staff to pry Kaun away from the Jayhawks, the Blue Devils do have one important person in their corner: The owner of the school.

``His preference is for Sasha to go to Duke, but the kid will make his own decision," added Goporo.

The Blue Devils staff came in to watch Kaun on Wednesday morning. However, the big man hasn't done all that much since suffering a stress fracture that kept him on the sidelines for the tail end of the summer.

Kaun began running last week and started some basketball drills and shooting this week.

Next week he'll take a major step when he concentrates on making a decision about his future and whether it lies in Lawrence, Kan., or Durham, N.C.

``It will definitely happen next week," Goporo said of a decision. "That's my goal because I'm tired of all this, too. It's not even his idea for him to commit next week. It's mind because I've got to start worrying about my team."

``Right now I think it's 50-50 to be honest," Goporo added about handicapping the two-team field.

That may be more optimistic than most oddsmakers would classify Duke's chances.
