Livingston Ready For New HS Role

After using their unofficial and official visits earlier in the process, the Duke coaching staff made another trip to Peoria Illinois last week in hopes of bettering their already strong recruiting pitch to the nation's top point guard. Aside from all the recruiting pressures, there's also the issue of his approaching senior campaign.

After hosting Krzyzewski and the staff for an open gym last week, nothing much has changed in the Shaun Livingston sweepstakes. The Blue Devils are still one of, if not the favorite among the three finalists, and Livingston will be taking all his visits before making his decision around November 1st.

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit is that Peoria High's head coach's season plans and goals for his superstar senior resemble the plans that Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski has laid out should Livingston choose the Blue Devils late this month.

"Shaun has unlimited potential on the offensive end of the floor," said Peoria coach Chuck Buescher, "but right now our focus for this season is getting him better at using his talents and abilities to put points on the boards."

During his junior season Livingston was able to put up 17 points per contest while handing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds, however Buescher says those kinds of numbers are only scratching the surface.

"Last year he wasn't in great physical shape, and you could see that. However he's committed himself to being in the best shape possible when we start practice in mid November. He knows he's got to be in shape because he's going to get everyone's best shot."

Aside from getting into better condition, Buescher says Livingston may benefit from a different role in this year's offensive scheme.

"We've got another player who will be helping bring the ball up the court for us, which will let Shaun float to the perimeter and let the offense flow through him. Last year he'd bring the ball up and make a pass, this year we want him on the wing so that he can direct the flow of offense and look to score a bit more. He's certainly a point guard, but he needs to work on being able to score in a variety of ways. Letting him play on the perimeter will do that, and it will let him have a hand in directing the entire offensive possession."

Livingston will be taking his third official visit to Arizona on October 17th, followed by a trip to Illinois on the 24th. He will then make an announcement soon after, possibly the following week.
