Blue Team Holds Off White, 80-73

Sophomores Shavlik Randolph and Lee Melchionni combined to score 44 points as the Blue team held off a late rally from the White team to win 80-73 in the annual Blue-White scrimmage Saturday night.

Randolph, who spent the off season rehabbing from hip surgery and adding weight, scored 23 points while grabbing 10 rebounds while Melchionni added 21 along with three steals and three assists.

After taking a 39-30 halftime advantage, the Blue team was stunned quickly as high touted freshman Luol Deng led the White team on a 16-2 run to take a 46-41 lead on a Nick Horvath three pointer, before the Blue responded with a 12-5 run of their own.

Deng finished with a team best 18 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists, and a blocked shot. Meanwhile Shelden Williams added 16 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. Nick Horvath and Daniel Ewing added 17 and 13 points respectively.

Perhaps the two biggest surprises of the night came in the form of Chris Duhon and Michael Thompson. Duhon ran the Blue team smoothly, scoring 12 points while handing out 10 assists against just two turnovers. Meanwhile Thompson established himself early on in the paint, scoring 15 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

Duke opens the season on Wednesday, November 5 by hosting the EA Sports All-Stars in an exhibition game at 7:00 p.m.
