Thompson To Leave Duke

Duke sophomore Michael Thompson is leaving the Blue Devils. The news broke Monday morning. Here's what we know.

Duke basketball program, according to his brother Elgin.

The news first broke at The Devils Den, the Duke site on network Monday morning.

Thompson played sparingly during his time in Durham and was a McDonald's All-American coming out of Joliet, Ill. He'll be looking to research his options quickly.

"He said that he wants to open it back up," Elgin Thompson said. Anyone wishing to get in the mix with Thompson will need to have one important factor: playing time.

"He wants minutes. It's not like he's not going to compete for the minutes. He can go in January and start practicing so you have a year to compete and show you deserve the minutes."

Thompson will look to take visits this month – the quicker the better – and then make a decision with the intention of enrolling as soon as possible in January. He could become eligible to play at the semester break next season.

A release is expected to come from Duke on Monday. In terms of programs, you can expect national level programs from major college leagues to have interest in him.
