"Yeah, that's a great institution and I cant wait to play there next year," says the 5-foot-9, 170 pounder with consistent 4.4 speed and was even timed at 4.37 this year. "Coach Roof's a great guy, and that was a big part of my decision. The academics at Duke are unbelievable, and it went half academics and half Coach Roof in my decision."
Harrell's official visit over the weekend proved just what he suspected in conversations with the coaches.
"The players' and coaches' interaction with each other, and how the players felt about the coaches showed that they care about each other. The recruits were great guys, too. Some of them were from the area, and they knew a lot so I could kind of get around."
It has been a long road for Harrell to get to the commitment status right now, having moved from Florida to Pennsylvania this year.
"Well, I came from Tampa Jesuit. I had nine interceptions last year, which was tied for first in the state, and I set the school record with four in a game. Coming here the coach said that I would have to lead the team and do pretty much everything because they didn't win a game the year before. I played everywhere on the field, and I ended the season with 14 touchdowns including a punt return and kickoff return. I had a little over 900 yards rushing in nine games, three interceptions and about 40 tackles."
As for his position at Duke, it is a little more tangible as compared to his prep days.
"Duke wants me to play corner, and that's what I'm fine playing. I wouldn't mind maybe a little special teams in there as well, but I'll do whatever it takes to win."
Offers, on the other hand, were a little harder to come by and only Harrell's coach knows the true number of schools that offered.
"Not many schools knew that I was up here, but my coach got on the phone and was calling around right before my official visit to Duke. He called South Florida, Purdue and Indiana. Most of those schools were recruiting me last year but they did not know that I was up here."
