Late Run Gives Duke Easy Win Over UNC

The top ranked Blue Devils seemed to be in for a battle against rival North Carolina as Duke led the #13 Tar Heels by 11 at half before freshman Ivory Latta sparked a run to tie the game at 48. Then it was time for the Blue Devils to turn it up a notch, to the tune of a 25-3 run to end the game, giving Duke an easy 79-57 win.

Senior Alana Beard scored 22 while Mistie Bass added 18 as Duke earned the program's 500th victory in 29 seasons of competition, and 47th consecutive ACC victory. Monique Currie also made her presence felt, adding 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

The Devils also upped their mark as the nation's top ranked program to 23-1 while adding a tenth straight loss to the Tar Heels' slate against Duke.

After finishing the first half with a seemingly comfortable 38-27 halftime advantage, Duke quickly found itself in a battle after Latta sparked a 21-10 North Carolina run to open the second half and tie the game with 10:17 remaining.

The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes before Beard found Lindsey Harding on the wing for a three pointer to break a 54-54 tie with 6:40 remaining in the game. Harding's shot would spark a 16-0 run that put the game out of reach.

During the run Duke turned to Bass, who scored six points thanks to inside play that earned a pair of trips to the free throw line. There she converted 3-of-4 attempts before converting a three point play to give Duke a 68-54 lead with just under three minutes remaining.

Duke, which is ranked #1 in the Associated Press Poll and second in the coaches' poll, returns to action next Sunday at Virginia.
