Signing Day 2004: Rodney Ezzard

Sometimes athletes head to college without a set position. That's the case for Georgia standout Rodney Ezzard who became the 5th commitment of the fall for the Blue Devils.

"When I met Coach Roof I decided that he's the guy I want to play for," said Rodney Ezzard of his first meeting with the then interim Blue Devil coach. "He has the same fire and desire to succeed that I do, so I committed to Duke."

Soon after Ezzard made things official for the Blue Devils, Roof was anointed as the programs head coach, which solidified Ezzard's commitment while fueling his desire to excel as a true freshman in Durham.

"I know that I can play early at Duke and I want to play as a freshman. I also want to get a great education. Duke has what I want."

Ezzard, Jr., 6-0 and 175 pounds, plays quarterback and free safety for Chamblee (SC), which finished the season at 6-4. He threw for 930 yards and eight touchdown passes and rushed for over 400 yards and five TDs.

On the defensive side of the ball, he recorded 80 tackles and four interceptions. With more and more depth developing at the quarterback position in Durham, look for Ezzard to compete for immediate playing time at either the safety or cornerback positions.

He is ranked as the #64 defensive back in the country by
