Signing Day 2004: Alfred Williams

After putting up career high numbers throughout the season, Buford (GA) standout receiver Ryan Wood got his first scholarship, and it turned out to be the only one he needed.

"I was pretty shocked when the offer came in," said Buford head coach, and Ryan Wood's father Dexter. "They hadn't been in contact for around three weeks over Christmas, and I figured they were out of available scholarships."

Then after that time away the Blue Devils sent assistant coach Scott Brown to Buford High School to meet with the Woods. While there he offered Ryan, who carries a 4.02 grade point average as a senior. Plans to visit Duke were then made for this past weekend where he offered his commitment on Sunday afternoon.

During his senior season Wood recorded 30 catches for 555 yards and three touchdowns for Buford along with fellow Blue Devil commitment Zach Smith, who chose Duke back in September of 2003.

So what was the deciding factor of Ryan Wood?

"I really liked their coaches and they just spent $25 million on new football facilities last year. I was just blown away by their facilities, and the academics are great there. Having a Duke degree speaks for itself, and the chance to play at the Division One level in the ACC is huge."
