Signing Day 2004: Zach Smith

He'd been a Duke fan since he was in Kindergarten and when the Blue Devils came calling with a scholarship offer it didn't take a second for Buford (GA) linebacker Zach Smith to snatch it up.

Ranked as the #70 player in the state of Georgia (regardless of positon), the 5-foot-11, 205 pounder started his career as a linebacker before adapting his game to become a top notch college safety, though he's not sure where he'll end up playing for Duke.

"I will play whatever they want me to play. They said they like me at linebacker and I would have to put on 10-15 pounds to play it. I am probably more built like a strong safety but again, I will play whatever they want me to play."

Smith brings a great attitude on the field and off the field to Duke, and will be ahead of the game in the classroom as well, with a 3.7 GPA and college classroom experience.

"Here in Georgia, we have joint-enrollment for senior high students who want experience in college to take two courses at the local college and still take high school courses and the state pays for it. I am taking Macro Economics and English 1101, which are both a good taste of what to expect in college."

While he is certainly the kind of player Duke looks to recruit off the field, Zach Smith also excels on the field where he uses speed and power to tackle and opponent brave enough to challenge him. His speed created quite a buzz this fall when he ran a blazing 4.34 forty at a combine at Stephenson High School in front of more than two dozen coaches.
