Signing Day 2004: Matt Rumsey

The offensive line needs continued to disappear as the recruiting season continued to roll along – especially in the state of Georgia where Duke swooped in and picked up a commitment from The Marist School in late November.

"I committed to Duke for a combination of reasons," Matt Rumsey told TDD after calling head coach Ted Roof with the news. "They recruited me from the beginning of the process, and Coach Roof is the best guy I've ever met in terms of coaches."

While Roof was the factor that finalized things in Rumsey's mind, the 6-foot-4, 270 pounder says the whole package offered by the Blue Devils was too much to pass up.

"They have the best academics and lets face it, you can't get much better than Duke. Plus their new facilities are among the best in the country. When you add it all up, it was and easy decision to make."

When he last checked Rumsey said he measured 6-foot-4 and was tipping the scales at a muscular 268 pounds. In the weight room he's able to bench-press 330 pounds, squats 500 and power clean 300.

Off the field he's equally as good, carrying a 3.6 grade point average with a 1330 on the SAT and 31 on the ACT in the books.

According to what he's been told in his discussions with the Blue Devil staff, Rumsey projects as an offensive guard at Duke.

Rumsey committed to Duke over Northwestern, Harvard, and other Big Ten, ACC, and Ivy League Schools.

He is rated as the #94 college prospect overall in the state of Georgia.
