Devils Show Improvement in Spring Game

On a particularly warm day in Wallace Wade Stadium, the Duke Blue Devils offered fans a preview of the 2004 season during Saturday's annual Spring Game. Rising senior quarterback Chris Dapolito tossed three touchdowns as the offense outpaced the defense 37-23.

The defense, which accumulated points in a variety of ways through a modified scoring system, did manage to earn a safety and 12 tackles for losses on the afternoon to finish with 23 points.

Rising sophomore defensive end Casey Camero finished the afternoon with eight tackles including two for a loss. In addition he and linebacker Giuseppe Aguanno ran down Segun Akande in the endzone late in the second half for a safety.

Meanwhile the Duke offense looked to be settling into the new offensive scheme with relative ease behind Dapolito, who connected on 13-of-24 pass attempts for 88 yards. Fellow quarterback Curt Dukes spent time showcasing his ability to make plays with his feet, though he completed just 2-of-7 pass attempts.

The favorite target on the afternoon was senior wide out Lance Johnson, who caught a game high seven passes for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Despite some minor glitches, head coach Ted Roof said he was pleased with the team's progress through the two weeks of spring practice.

"I am very excited about the work we got done this spring and today," said Roof. "We showed good progress today in our game operations, like the contact speed and timing. Except for one bad snap we took care of the ball. We were quick getting in and out of the huddles, ran crisp plays, and showed good execution, but we are going to get better. I thought we played with good enthusiasm today. The people out here at the game appreciate a great effort, so we're going to have to play that way all year."

After Matt Brooks opened the day's scoring with a 24-yard field goal, Dapolito hooked up with Johnson on a four-yard scoring strike. Alex Feinberg then connected on a 30-yard field goal prior to Dapolito's second touchdown pass to Johnson, this one covering 17 yards. Brooks then booted a 37-yard field goal, and Dapolito scored on a two-yard run.

Duke opens the 2004 season at Navy on September 4.
