Downs' Recruitment Heating Up

After formulating a plan and evaluating a number of prospects in the class of 2005, the Blue Devils have begun to move forward with the rising senior class. One of the top prospects on the roster is the spitting image of a former national champion. TDD caught up with Micah Downs on Wednesday night to discuss the latest developments in his recruitment.

For starters Downs isn't exactly certain he's been offered by the Blue Devils at this point in his recruiting process. However he certainly knows that Duke is interested in him.

"They haven't come out and said it's an official scholarship offer," said 6-foot-8 Seattle shooting guard Micah Downs of his recent talks with the Blue Devils. "They've just told me that they would love for me to come in and be part of their program."

Despite his relative uncertainty on the details of Duke's offer, Downs admits that he's looking forward to getting to Durham for a visit in the coming weeks, but not before he visits Kansas this weekend.

"I'm looking forward to visiting Kansas, and I will definitely want to make a visit to Duke. They've told me they want me to come down the weekend after I visit KU, but we haven't gotten all the details worked out. I think we'll get that taken care of in the next few days."

Aside from the Jayhawks and Blue Devils, Downs is also looking at Gonzaga, though most seem to think the big guard will end up choosing from the duo of high major programs. And each has it's appeal to him.

"Kansas has a nice tradition and I really like Coach Self. He's a real Christian, and so am I so that's something. I like the way the team is a family there – the team is always over at his house and hanging out with each other."

"Gonzaga is a lot like Kansas, and it's close to home. I like the way the team is close to one another on and off the floor."

"With Duke, what's not to like? I mean it's Duke. Coach K is the best in the business at putting players in the league, and that's my ultimate goal. I really like their offense because they can run the fast paced style or play well in the halfcourt. Coach also gets all his players to play hard and demands the best. That's why Duke can put so many players in the NBA."

Shortly after the Boo Williams AAU event in April, Downs saw a number of high major programs come calling including the Blue Devils. Shortly after an open gym that saw assistant coach Steve Wojciechowski attend, his official list was cut from over 10 programs to the final three. At that time Downs had yet to talk with Mike Krzyzewski – something that has changed in the last few weeks.

"I've talked to him a lot and have begun to get to know him. He says I would fit in really well with their team. He wants me to get down there for a visit as soon as I can. He also said he thinks I can be real successful with their system."

In between his visits Downs says he's just relaxing and working on his game, hoping to improve all around before the hectic AAU season gets back into gear.

"We've got a few weeks off before we get back out on the road. We're going to New Orleans, and so I'm just hanging around shooting hoops and trying to improve every part of my game."
