Duke Season Opener Almost Set

The Duke Blue Devils' season opening contests are almost set according to a recent article in the High Point Enterprise. The only thing holding up the official announcement is a pending court case involving the NCAA.

"We're all set. The contract has been signed," HPU athletic director Woody Gibson said last week about HPU's game at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Thursday, Nov. 11. "The only thing that can alter it is if an appeals court upholds the NCAA rule."

Should the court uphold the NCAA's rule of two non-exempt games in four seasons, then the Blue Devils would be unable to participate in this year's Coaches' vs. Cancer Classic. However the NCAA rule has been struck down in lower courts already.

Should Duke be allowed to participate in the preseason tournament, the season opener would be played at approximately 9 p.m. on Nov. 11, likely televised by ESPN. Richmond and Bucknell will play in the opener at 7 p.m., also at Cameron.

The winners would play the next night for the right to advance to Madison Square Garden to face the winners from the three other four-team competitions. Other sites will be Kansas, California and Syracuse.
