Rated as a two star prospect by the latest Insiders ratings, Spead was a key member of Camden's State Championship run as a junior. As a senior he's expected to be the leader of the defensive unit after totaling 36 tackles, forcing a fumble, picking off a pass, and breaking up 10 passes last season.
He attributes his success to a hard nosed attitude and natural skill set.
"Press coverage, I just like to get in the receivers face and try and lock him down for the game. I feel that is my strength, but I want to get better at my footwork and recovery time."
Does Spead have a list of favorites?
"It is early, but right now it would be Duke, MTSU, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and Florida."
Spead attended one camp this year and that was at Florida. Distance is no factor for him.
Dalron Spead posts a 2.9 GPA and 840 SAT score.
When quizzed on what makes the Blue Devils stand out in his mind, he responded:
"They are a young team and they had a good season last year. They also have very good academics."
With Camden approaching 2004 with the label of "defending state champions," does Spead feel there's any pressure on his squad to win?
"Everybody wants to beat us. They're going to be gunning for us just like they were during track so we've got to stay focused. Were going to have to score more points than we did last year, and play better defense if were going to repeat."
