Redick & Williams Named Preseason Top 50

DURHAM, N.C. - Duke juniors J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams were named among the Top 50 preseason candidates for the 2004-05 Wooden Award All-America Team on Tuesday, August 3.

The top 50 candidates, selected by the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Committee, were chosen based on last year's individual performance and team records. The student-athletes selected are all returning players. Incoming freshman and transfer students are not included. These athletes and other players who excel throughout the season will be eligible for the Midseason Top 30 list and the National Ballot.

Last season, Redick and Williams helped guide the Blue Devils to a 31-6 record and the program's 14th Final Four appearance. Redick, an NABC third team All-America selection, led Duke in scoring (15.9 ppg.), three-point field goals (102) and free throw percentage (.953) a year ago. Williams, a Basketball Times third team All-America pick, averaged 12.6 ppg. while leading the team in rebounding (8.5 rpg.), blocked shots (111) and free throw attempts (200).

In mid January, the Wooden Award committee will release the Midseason Top 30 on CBS Sports. On Tuesday, March 29, the ten player Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced. One member of the Wooden Award All-American Team will be selected on Saturday, April 9 as the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy as the nation's "Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year". The event will be televised live from The Los Angeles Athletic Club on CBS Sports. A complete list of the 2004-05 Preseason Top 50 can be found at
