Second Scrimmage Shows Progress

To the delight to head coach Ted Roof, Duke's second scrimmage of the preseason was filled with high intensity as the Blue Devils battled for over 100 plays on Wednesday evening.

"I really like the way we competed tonight," Roof said following the practice session. "I was pleased with the contact and the tempo. I was disappointed in the penalties, and we have to take care of the football. We can't win turning the ball over."

The Blue Devil defense was spearheaded by senior defensive tackle Orrin Thompson (1 sack, 2 TFL & 1 PBU), sophomore cornerback John Talley (1 TFL & 2 PBU) and an interception by freshman cornerback Rodney Ezzard.

The offensive production was highlighted by sophomore tailback Aaron Fryer's 70-yard, one-touchdown rushing performance on 14 carries and a 50-yard field goal by senior kicker Matt Brooks.

Sophomore quarterback Mike Schneider hit on 15-of-33 passes for 95 yards including an 18-yard scoring strike to sophomore tight end Ben Patrick.

Junior wide receiver Mark Wigal led Duke with five receptions for 47 yards while senior tight end Calen Powell, sophomore wide receiver Deonto McCormick and freshman wide receiver Jomar Wright contributed four catches each. In addition, freshman tailback Justin Boyle scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground. Duke will host its annual Meet The Blue Devils Day on Sunday from 2-4 pm in the Yoh Center. The Blue Devils open the 2004 season at Navy on September 4.
