Duke Prepares For 92nd Year Of Intercollegiate Football

The 2004 season will mark Duke's 92nd campaign of intercollegiate football, and the Blue Devils hold an all-time record of 440-408-31 ... Football was introduced at Duke by Dr. John Crowell, who coached then Trinity College to victories in its first two games ever -- wins of 16-0 and 25-17 over North Carolina in 1888 ... After the 1894 season, football was banned at Duke by the Board of Trustees, but returned in high form in 1920 when Floyd Egan guided the team to a 4-0-1 ledger.

Season Openers

Duke enters 2004 with a 54-34-3 all-time record in season openers ... The Blue Devils have won three out of their last 10 season lid-lifters.

The Duke-Navy Series

Duke and Navy have met 33 times on the gridiron, with the Midshipmen holding a 16-12-5 series advantage ... The series dates back to a 32-6 Navy win during the 1927 season, and the Mids won six of the first seven meetings ... In addition, Navy would enjoy a stretch from 1949-57 where the Midshipmen went 3-0-4 versus the Blue Devils ... Duke offensive coordinator Marty Galbraith and Navy aide Kevin Kelly coached together at Marshall in 1998 ... Kelly then spent one season at Syracuse alongside Duke co-defensive coordinator Jerry Azzinaro ... Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green is no stranger to Duke having competed against the Blue Devils as a player at N.C. State and as a member of the Wolfpack coaching staff (1979, 1986-89, 1990-93 & 2000-01) ... Green and Galbraith were on the same N.C. State staff in 2000-01 ... Duke assistant head coach Glenn Spencer and Navy assistant coach Brian Bohannon served on the same staff at West Georgia in 1994-95 ... In 1957, the two squads, with Navy ranked seventh and Duke 16th, battled to a 6-6 tie in Baltimore ... In 1960, the 13th-ranked Blue Devils rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to upend fourth-ranked Navy, 19-10, in Durham.

Duke vs. Navy: The Future

The Blue Devils and Midshipmen are scheduled to continue the series for the next four seasons, with Navy travelling to Durham in both 2005 (October 1) and 2006 (September 9) ... Duke is scheduled to serve as Navy's Homecoming opponent on October 20, 2007.

Under A New Roof

On December 6, 2003, Ted Roof became the 20th head coach in Duke football history ... A 1987 graduate of Georgia Tech, Roof served as Duke's interim head coach for the final five weeks of the 2003 season ... Under Roof's guidance, Duke snapped a 30-game losing streak in ACC play with a 41-17 victory over Georgia Tech on November 8, and then closed out the season by defeating North Carolina, 30-22, for the Blue Devils' first win over the Tar Heels since 1989.

Uniform Patch

In 2004, Duke will wear a patch on its jersey to recognize the passing of Micah Harris, a rising senior defensive end who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on June 11, 2004 ... The patch is a black heart with Harris' jersey number 55 inside.


The Blue Devils finished the 2003 season at 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the ACC ... Duke won two out of its last three games under then interim head coach Ted Roof, posting victories over Georgia Tech and North Carolina ... Navy rolled to an 8-5 ledger and made an appearance in the Houston Bowl.


On September 28, 2002 in Annapolis, Duke scored 40 unanswered points to earn a 43-17 victory over the Midshipmen as 31,647 fans looked on at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ... Running backs Alex Wade (123) and Chris Douglas (73) combined to rush for 196 yards while wide receiver Senterrio Landrum added a 69-yard touchdown run for the Blue Devils ... Navy entered the game averaging 304.7 rushing yards per game -- the second-best mark in the nation -- but was limited to just 240 net yards on 51 attempts.


Duke's Ted Roof (Georgia Tech `87) is in his first full season as head coach of the Blue Devils ... Roof compiled a 2-3 record as Duke interim head coach last year ... Paul Johnson (Western Carolina `79) is in his third year as head coach at Navy ... He is 10-15 with the Midshipmen and 72-25 overall as a college head coach.
