Duke Football Schedule Released

DURHAM, N.C. - Six home dates including games with Florida State and Virginia Tech - winners of the past two ACC championships - along with non-conference dates with East Carolina, Navy and VMI highlight Duke's 2005 football schedule released on Thursday by the ACC Office. The Blue Devils will take on a total of eight teams that secured bowl eligibility a year ago.

Duke opens the 2005 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a non-conference game at East Carolina. The Blue Devils will then open the home and portions of their schedule in Wallace Wade Stadium against defending ACC champion Virginia Tech on September 10. One week later, VMI will visit Durham before Duke closes out the month against Virginia in Charlottesville on September 24.

Navy will visit Durham for Duke's third and final non-conference game on Oct. 1. Following a trip to face Miami, the Blue Devils enjoy three consecutive home games with Georgia Tech (Oct. 15), Florida State (Oct. 22) and Wake Forest (Oct. 29).

To conclude the regular season, a pair of road games with Clemson (Nov. 5) and North Carolina (Nov. 19) are sandwiched around an open date.

The combined overall 2004 record for Duke's 11 opponents is 71-58 (.550) including a 71-47 (.602) ledger for its NCAA I-A foes. Navy (10-2) and Virginia Tech (10-3) led the way with 10 wins each followed by Florida State (9-3), Miami (9-3), Virginia (8-4), Georgia Tech (7-5), Clemson (6-5), North Carolina (6-6), Wake Forest (4-7), East Carolina (2-9) and VMI (0-11).

The 2005 campaign will mark the ACC's first season with divisional play. The Coastal Division includes Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech while the Atlantic Division features Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, N.C. State and Wake Forest. The inaugural ACC Championship game featuring the divisional winners is set for Dec. 3, 2005 at ALLTEL Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
